On Sunday, July 18, 2010, the Times ran a lead editorial strongly endorsing Crown Point building the Bo Jackson stadium.
On July 18, 2007 the Times ran a lead editorial strongly endorsing the $500,000 Plasmatronics loan by the city of Crown Point. That editorial was instrumental in pushing through the loan which was approved a few days later.
The Times editorial said Plasmatronics was a “good company†and the loan was “a good project.†Plasmatronics took the money and left in early 2008 without paying it back, once it was evident they were not getting any more money.
Discovery documents in the lawsuit to recover the Plasmatronics loan after they defaulted showed that 63 wealthy local individuals and 4 local banks were approached, but no one would invest or loan a penny to Plasmatronics. Only the Times, Dan Klein, the Crown Point administration and city council thought Plasmatronics was a “good company†and a “good project.â€
This raises the question of whether the Times is expert enough to recognize a good investment when one is proposed or if the Times and Crown Point government are acting totally politically.
As a result, I am skeptical when the Times endorses a project that looks like a scam.
