Prisoners have a better diet than Health Service hospital patients, scientists warn

By Daniel Martin
Last updated at 4:20 PM on 31st August 2009

Patients in Health Service hospitals are far more likely to go hungry than criminals in jail, scientists warned yesterday.
They say frail and elderly patients do not get the help they need with meals, and nobody checks whether they get enough to eat.
Despite years of Government promises to tackle poor hospital nutrition, food still arrives cold, and patients often miss out because meal times clash with tests and operations.

Meanwhile, prisoners are enjoying carbohydrate-rich, low-fat foods which in many cases are better than they would have been eating on the outside.
The Daily Mail has been highlighting the scandal of old people not being fed properly in hospital as part of its Dignity for the Elderly campaign.
Hospital meals are often taken away untouched, because they are either unappetising or are placed out of patients' reach.
The latest figures show 242 patients died of malnutrition in NHS hospitals in 2007 - the highest toll in a decade. More than 8,000 left hospital under-nourished - double the figure when Labour came to power.

Sentenced to death on the NHS
Patients with terminal illnesses are being made to die prematurely under an NHS scheme to help end their lives, leading doctors warn today.

By Kate Devlin, Medical Correspondent
Published: 10:00PM BST 02 Sep 2009

In a letter to The Daily Telegraph, a group of experts who care for the terminally ill claim that some patients are being wrongly judged as close to death.

Under NHS guidance introduced across England to help doctors and medical staff deal with dying patients, they can then have fluid and drugs withdrawn and many are put on continuous sedation until they pass away.

But this approach can also mask the signs that their condition is improving, the experts warn.

As a result the scheme is causing a “national crisis” in patient care, the letter states. It has been signed palliative care experts including Professor Peter Millard, Emeritus Professor of Geriatrics, University of London, Dr Peter Hargreaves, a consultant in Palliative Medicine at St Luke’s cancer centre in Guildford, and four others.

It's commonly known in the medical jargon as "snowing" a patient. When food and water is withdrawn, but sedatives and painkillers are still freely administered, the body cannot utilize the normal functions to dispose of the medications. Eventually, over a short period of time, the medications accumulate into a lethal toxicity level, ie, overdose, resulting in passive euthanasia.

Children: You spend the first 2 years of their life teaching them to walk and talk. Then you spend the next 16 years telling them to sit down and shut-up.

I think Obama's approval ratings will go up substantially following his great speech tonight. He straightened out many of the lies that have been told in the past few months, and in my opinion inspired the nation to support health care reform.

It really was a great speech. I especially liked this line.
I believe that soon, very soon, affordable health coverage will be available to all, in an America where the state of a family’s health will never again depend on the amount of a family’s wealth

Historically, the President's numbers do NOT get much of a bounce after a speech.

The fact is that Ali bin Obama didn't say anything new, just some slighlty new twists on the same old lies and half-truths.

I don't think he changed anyone's mind and in fact, demostrated the weakness of his position.

I especially enjoyed this line;

"You lie!" Rep. Joe Wilson, R-S.C., shouted from his seat on the Republican side of the chamber.

Barack Hussein Obama is a lying racist scumbag.

Perfect illustration of what's wrong in Washington.
When did a Dem ever shout out during a president's speech, unable to control himself for even a few minutes? Pathetic!

Actually, Ali bin Obama and his thugs trying to force socialism on America is a perfect illustration of what is wrong in Washington.

Democrat socialists unable to control themselves with other people's money.

Typical.

Yeah, great line.
Who wrote it - the grand poet himself, Jesse Jackson?

Obama disapproval on health care up to 52 percent
AP

By ALAN FRAM, Associated Press Writer Alan Fram, Associated Press Writer – Wed Sep 9, 11:45 pm ET

WASHINGTON – Public disapproval of President Barack Obama's handling of health care has leaped to 52 percent, according to Associated Press-GfK poll that underscores the country's glowering mood as the White House made a renewed pitch for an overhaul.

Just 42 percent approve of the president's work on the high-profile health issue. The survey was released Wednesday before his nationally televised effort to persuade Congress and voters to back his drive to reshape the nation's $2.5 trillion-a-year medical system.
