WH: Obama 'not concerned' about gas price blame
Washington Examiner, by Joel Gehrke

President Obama "is not concerned" that he will be blamed for high gas prices, according to his spokesman, notwithstanding Obama's recent comment that he doesn't want high gas prices in an election year.

"The president is not concerned about who gets the blame. The president is concerned about making sure that we have the right policies to deal with this challenge for the long-term," White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said in today's press briefing.

Two weeks ago, though, Obama did mention the threat that gas prices pose to his presidency. "Just from a political perspective, do you think the President of the United States going into re-election wants gas prices to go up higher?" he said lightheartedly to reporters.

FACT CHECK: More US Drilling Didn't Drop Gas Price

By JACK GILLUM and SETH BORENSTEIN Associated Press

WASHINGTON March 21, 2012 (AP)

It's the political cure-all for high gas prices: Drill here, drill now. But more U.S. drilling has not changed how deeply the gas pump drills into your wallet, math and history show.

A statistical analysis of 36 years of monthly, inflation-adjusted gasoline prices and U.S. domestic oil production by The Associated Press shows no statistical correlation between how much oil comes out of U.S. wells and the price at the pump.

If more domestic oil drilling worked as politicians say, you'd now be paying about $2 a gallon for gasoline. Instead, you're paying the highest prices ever for March.

Political rhetoric about the blame over gas prices and the power to change them — whether Republican claims now or Democrats' charges four years ago — is not supported by cold, hard figures. And that's especially true about oil drilling in the U.S. More oil production in the United States does not mean consistently lower prices at the pump.

Republican shills for big oil make up crap and lie.

"Drill, baby, drill has nothing to do with it," said Judith Dwarkin, chief energy economist at ITG investment research. Two other energy economists said the same thing and experts in the field have been making that observation for decades.

The statistics directly contradict the title of GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich's 2008 book "Drill Here, Drill Now, Pay Less," as well as the campaign-trail claims from the GOP presidential candidates.

Quote:
Republican Politicians Oppose Ending Taxpayer Handouts to Big Oil: Every Republican presidential contender and nearly every Republican member of the House and Senate has signed a pledge to oppose ending taxpayer handouts to Big Oil — handouts that will add up to more than $40 BILLION over the next ten years. In addition, Republicans have repeatedly voted in lockstep to block efforts to repeal the tax giveaways to Big Oil. President Obama, however, remains undaunted and has once again included repeal of these wasteful giveaways in his budget for 2013.
Republican Politicians Want to Cut Big Oil’s Taxes Even More: Both the House Republican budget plan released last year (and supported by nearly every Republican member of the House and Senate) and the tax plans of every GOP presidential contender call for cutting the corporate tax rate by one-third or more. This huge tax cut could result in another big windfall of billions of dollars for Big Oil. By contrast, President Obama has proposed closing wasteful tax loopholes and wants to clamp down on the use of foreign tax shelters (ExxonMobil uses at least 20) that allow huge corporations to avoid paying their fair share in U.S. taxes.

When Bush and running mate Dick Cheney campaigned in 2000, they argued that as oil executives they could get oil prices down, with Bush saying, "I would work with our friends in OPEC to convince them to open up the spigot, to increase the supply."

Yet it was during the last few months of Bush's term in 2008 that gas prices hit their highest: $4.27 when adjusted for inflation.

18 days later and it is up to $4.34.

Are you in favor of this trend continuing for another 5 years?

Poll: 68% Disapprove of Obama’s Job Handling Spike In Gas Prices

Image

Somehow he’ll find a way to blame this on Bush.

Quote:
Despite efforts to tout his administration’s energy policies, a new poll finds voters still overwhelmingly disapprove of President Obama’s handling of high gas prices.

Sixty-eight percent of those surveyed in a new Reuters/Ipsos poll released Tuesday disapproved of Obama’s efforts on high prices at the pump. Twenty-four percent approved of how the administration is handling the price spikes.

On a worrying note for the president, the disapproval registers across party lines, with 89 percent of Republicans, 52 percent of Democrats and 73 percent of independents giving him negative marks on gas prices.
