A former classmate of President Barack Obama’s father claims that as a student, the Presidential sire viewed the Soviet Union as a “liberating force.”

The recollections of Naranhkiri Tith are published in Barack Obama: The Story, a new biography by Washington Post reporter David Maraniss released today.

Tith, the son of a former Cambodian Prime Minister, was a close friend of Barack Obama Sr. in the early 1960s, when as classmates the two carried on what Maraniss describes as “a debating road show on communism.”

Obama immigration shift a hit with voters, says new poll

President Barack Obama's high-profile shift on immigration last week—announcing plans to grant temporary legal status to as many as 800,000 undocumented people brought to American soil as children—has the overwhelming support of likely voters in a new Bloomberg poll released Tuesday.
Sixty-four percent of them—and 66 percent of independents, the frequently up-for-grabs voters thought to decide elections—support the president's decision. The White House has forcefully (and rather implausibly) denied that Obama sought political gain from his announcement. But as recently as March 2011, he had said publicly that he lacked the power to halt such deportations.

The Bloomberg survey found that just 30 percent of likely voters disagreed with the president's plan. Fifty-six percent of likely Republican voters opposed it, while 86 percent of Democrats supported it. Just 26 percent of independents sided with the Republican majority in the poll.

LOS CABOS, Mexico – President Barack Obama warned Mitt Romney and his advisers to not attack him on foreign policy, telling the press here that “we have one president at a time.”

Asked about a Romney adviser’s op-ed in a German newspaper last month critical of Obama’s economic plan, Obama argued that there’s a history of not letting domestic politics intercede in international conversations.

“I would point out that we have one president at a time and one administration at a time, and I think traditionally the notion has been that America’s political differences end at the water’s edge,” Obama said, speaking at the end of his two-day conference with world leaders here.

Romney Campaign Said to Ask Scott to Downplay Job Gains

Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign asked Florida Governor Rick Scott to tone down his statements heralding improvements in the state’s economy because they clash with the presumptive Republican nominee’s message that the nation is suffering under President Barack Obama, according to two people familiar with the matter.

Scott, a Republican, was asked to say that the state’s jobless rate could improve faster under a Romney presidency, according to the people, who asked not to be named.

What’s unfolding in Florida highlights a dilemma for the Romney campaign: how to allow Republican governors to take credit for economic improvements in their states while faulting Obama’s stewardship of the national economy. Republican governors in Ohio, Virginia, Michigan and Wisconsin also have highlighted improving economies.

Say what Willard?

At a campaign event last night in Boston, President Obama criticized “Romney and his Republican allies” for refusing to raise taxes on the rich, insisting to his audience that Clinton brought about the prosperity of the 90′s by raising taxes.

“We created a whole lot of millionaires to boot. Businesses did just fine,” he insisted as the crowd applauded. “And you know there are plenty of patriotic, successful Americans all across the country — I meet them every day — who’d be willing to make this contribution again because they understand there is such a thing as the common good. They understand that we’re in this thing together.”

He told the group, “I am not a perfect man and I will never be a perfect president,” but stressed the importance of Americans working together and acknowledged his need of the crowd’s support.

“This is going to be a close election. The economy is still tough and folks are still frustrated,” Obama said. He explained the messages from the Romney campaign will be, “the economy is bad and it’s Obama’s fault,” but insisted that when he travels the country his faith is restored each day.

Laughing, he commented that in 2008 he didn’t have all the gray hair he does today but promised “I believe in you. I hope you still believe in me.”

The six-term congressman said Hoosier businesses are excessively burdened by state regulations, preventing them from hiring new workers....

...State agencies in 2011 adopted 129 final rules and 163 emergency rules. A Pence campaign policy document points out that's more than one new regulation every other day.

But a review of those regulations by The Times found 73 of the emergency rules, or 45 percent, were descriptions of new pull-tab or scratch-off lottery games, which must be added to the Indiana Administrative Code to be eligible for sale.

Other state rules adopted in 2011 included measures to implement Indiana's private school voucher program, cap the value of dental services an adult Medicaid patient is eligible to receive and prohibiting Hoosiers from importing wild hogs into the state.

The election is over, and they know it.

President Obama this month participated in 33 fundraisers, a rate of just over one a day and more than eight times the number of fundraising events George W. Bush did in June 2004, the year of Bush’s reelection campaign.

The Obama fundraising tally — courtesy of the most trusted White House statistician, CBS News White House correspondent Mark Knoller — suggests a president furiously grasping for cash as his campaign fails to meet its fundraising targets and suddenly finds itself outraised by Mitt Romney.

Bush did only four fundraisers in June 2004 and by the end of the month had attended 82 since the start of his campaign in 2003, less than half the 172 Obama has done since he filed for reelection in April 2011.

(ABC News) — The Obama Campaign is vigorously defending its attacks on Mitt Romney as an “outsourcer,” following an analysis by one independent fact-checker that called some of the claims “untrue” and others “thinly supported.”

In a six-page letter to FactCheck.org, deputy Obama campaign manager Stephanie Cutter disputes the notion that Romney cannot be held accountable for outsourcing by Bain Capital-owned companies after February 1999, when he stepped down as CEO.

FactCheck.org reporters Brooks Jackson and Eugene Kiely had claimed in their report that the Obama campaign overreached in its TV ads labeling Romney as an “outsourcer in chief” because they “found no evidence to support the claim that Romney — while he was still running Bain Capital — shipped American jobs overseas.”. . .

But Jackson and Kiely don’t dispute the notion that some work went overseas. “That was the core business for Modus Media and SMTC Corp. — two outsource companies featured in a June 21 article in the Washington Post that has been the basis of recent Obama TV ads,” they write. “Bain also invested in U.S.-based companies that sold goods manufactured here and abroad, and some of those companies closed U.S. facilities and eliminated U.S. jobs.”

What was Romney’s role in those cases? It’s not entirely clear. While Team Obama claims Romney’s departure from Bain in 1999 wasn’t a clean break, they do not present any direct evidence that Romney had a hands-on, decision-making role in any of the outsourcing cases cited in the ads.

Mitt Romney’s comment that Russia is America’s “No. 1 geopolitical foe,” a red-meat line for Republicans, is also attracting some attention in Moscow.

Alexey Pushkov, chairman of the international affairs committee of the State Duma, said in a recent interview that Russian leaders have noted Romney’s comments with concern, and are watching with interest as neoconservative and “realist” advisers maneuver for influence within the campaign.

“We don’t think that for us Romney will be an easy partner,” said Pushkov, an ally of President Vladimir Putin. “We think that Romney will be, on the rhetorical side, a replay of the Bush administration.”

He also noted Romney’s statements that the United States should assert its dominance in the 21st century.

“If he is serious about this, I’m afraid he may choose the neocon-type people. . . In the first year of his presidency, we may have a full-scale crisis,” he said.
