Man charged with cocaine dealing requests lower bail

VALPARAISO -- A Fort Wayne man is requesting lower bail on a cocaine dealing charge so he can be with his pregnant wife and 15-month-old son.

Shannon Mallory, 27, faces felony charges of possession with intent to deliver and up to 50 years in jail if convicted. He also faces misdemeanor marijuana charges, which could add a year.

Judge Roger Bradford did lower the bond amount from $25,000 to $20,000, although Deputy Prosecutor Matthew Frost asked that it be set at $50,000 because of Mallory's criminal history.

Mallory was off probation by the time he was arrested Aug. 15, he said. And he argued that he didn't know why he'd been incarcerated and his passenger, who'd been on probation, wasn't.

The drugs found during the stop belonged to the other man and dealing didn't match his record.

"I rob people. I do not sell drugs or anything like that," Mallory said in court.

He was arrested during a traffic stop about 1 a.m. in Valparaiso, court records state.

The officer smelled marijuana coming from the car and called in a drug-sniffing dog, which found a blunt cigar filled with marijuana on Mallory.

A vacuum-sealed 88-gram piece of cocaine was also found under the car's dash on the driver's side.

Mallory faces trial on Feb. 2. His next court appearance is Dec. 1.

"I rob people. I do not sell drugs or anything like that," Mallory said in court.

About as bad as saying "Hey! I just kill people. I don't rape women." :smt003

If people were more responsible I'd say maybe we outta lay off pot & coke users and concentrate on more serious matters. But this sounds like the equivalent of driving with an open container. It's not like they were sitting home minding their own business.
