A woman armed with an umbrella successfully fought off a gunman who attempted to steal her purse after she got off the South Shore train at the Gary Metro Station Thursday night.

According to Northern Indiana Public Transportation District Transit Police Chief Robert Byrd the 42-year-old DeMotte woman got off the South Shore train and was walking to her car at W. 3rd Avenue and Jefferson Street (where she parked because the lots were full) when she was approached by a man who said, "What time is it? Did you just get off the train? I'm the Gary police. I'm not here to hurt you, you (expletive)."

Byrd said the woman knew the man wasn't a police officer and continued walking to her car when a second man jumped out of the bushes and said, "Give me your purse. I have a gun. I'll shoot you."

The woman then began beating the gunman with her umbrella, Byrd said. The gunman chased the woman around her car and said, "I'll shoot you. Stop hitting me."

At that time, an unknown person yelled, "Hey!" and the gunman ran to the west toward W. 3rd Avenue and Madison Street and the first man ran toward the Gary Metro Station, Byrd said.

The woman was not injured in the incident.

The case is being investigated by the Gary Police Department, Byrd said, but his department is also getting involved because the crime occurred against one of its commuters.

"We're writing it up as an attempted armed robbery," Byrd said.

The man who claimed to be a Gary police officer is described as a male black, 28 to 35 years old, who was wearing a stocking cap and dark jacket and was carrying a black book bag at the time of the incident. The gunman is described as a male black, 17 to 23 years old standing 5 feet 8 inches tall with a thin build wearing a black and yellow hoodie.

"We just want to let our commuters know to be safe, be alert of their surroundings and to walk in numbers," Byrd said.

Anyone with information about the crime is asked to contact NICTD transit police at (219) 398-6000 or the Gary Police Department detective bureau at (219) 881-1209.

Eight arrested in Klan-related killing, police say

(CNN) -- Eight people were arrested Tuesday, one on a charge of murder, in connection with the fatal shooting of a woman at a remote Louisiana campsite during what police say was an initiation ceremony for the Ku Klux Klan.
Chuck Foster is charged with second-degree murder in the woman's death.

Image

The woman, whose identity has not been confirmed, was recruited over the Internet to join the Klan by the suspects, said Capt. George Bonnett of the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office.

The woman traveled from Oklahoma to Louisiana for the ceremony and was taken to a campsite near Sun, Louisiana, about 60 miles north of New Orleans.

On Sunday, the woman asked to be taken from the camp to a nearby town. An argument ensued, and the woman was fatally shot by the group's leader, Bonnett said.

Some of the suspects then tried to conceal the killing by burning the woman's personal items, he said.

Police received a tip about the killing and found the woman's body hidden under loose brush alongside a road, Bonnett said. The suspects, most of whom were still in the woods near the campsite several miles from where the body was found, were taken into custody without incident, he said.

The group's leader, identified as Chuck Foster, 44, was charged with second-degree murder. The others were charged with lesser crimes related to trying to conceal the killing, Bonnett said.

Authorities found weapons, several flags and six Klan uniforms in the area, he said.

Gary man arrested after hospital scuffle

A Brunswick man involved in a two-car crash Monday night was arrested at the hospital after he allegedly struggled with officers and spit blood at one of them as they attempted to restrain him in the emergency room, police said Tuesday.

Phillip Robinson, 54, of 1037 Stevenson St., was being held on a Lake County warrant while Detective Cpl. Arturo Azcona prepares charges including battery by bodily waste and driving without a valid license.

About 8:30 p.m., Patrolman Irving Givens went to a crash in the 3100 block of Georgia Street where Robinson's brown Chrysler had struck the rear of a green Chevrolet minivan.

Robinson provided police with an identification card, but no driver's license.

At the emergency room, he "became very belligerent and loud," and refused to be quiet, the arrest report states.

He refused to undergo a blood test for alcohol and when police held him down he spit blood on Givens, police said.

Timothy L. Davis, 42, has been charged with intimidation and criminal recklessness, Lt. Samuel Roberts said.

Shantray Hooks told Detective LaRia Crews she was at the home she shares with Davis when he asked for $3 and they argued.

Hooks said Davis made "stabbing motions" at her while threatening to kill her, telling her, "You must don't know I got bodies behind my name."

Davis faces up to three years in prison if convicted of the charge.

Keep lovin them artie!

Teacher in fatal crash carried cocaine

GARY -- When Merilyn Bouler died in a two-car crash here Friday night, she had cocaine in her coat pocket, police said Wednesday.

Bouler, 39, an English teacher at Pierce Middle School in Merrillville, was being treated at The Methodist Hospitals emergency room in Gary when the cocaine was discovered.

She died from blunt force trauma shortly after her car was hit broadside then slammed into a house at 19th Avenue and Taft Street about 11:30 p.m.

Police described the amount of cocaine as small, "for personal use," and declined to elaborate further. The drug was confiscated by police, but the total weight was not released Wednesday.

Results of her toxicology report won't be available for several more days, Lake County Coroner David Pastrick said.

Bouler's son, Jonte Barber, 9, died in the crash, while her older son, Markel Evans, 11, was critically injured.

The other driver, Felix Ross, was arrested for drunken driving after police obtained a .14 percent blood alcohol level. The standard for drunken driving in Indiana is .08 percent.

Traffic investigators said they learned Ross was driving east and ran a red light as he crossed Taft Street at 19th Avenue. But Ross has told some people he had the right of way when he entered the intersection.

The cars hit a traffic signal before Bouler's car crashed into the house. Firefighters had to cut occupants from the car before they could be treated for injuries.

Co-workers, friends and students described Bouler as dedicated and faithful during memorials at her church and school this week.

Funeral services for Bouler and her son are set for 11 a.m. Saturday at St. John Baptist Church, 2457 Massachusetts St.

ADL: White Supremacist Rage Boils Over After Obama Victory
Last update: 1:21 p.m. EST Nov. 10, 2008
NEW YORK, Nov 10, 2008 /PRNewswire-USNewswire via COMTEX/ -- RACIST SITE CRASHES AFTER ELECTION

In the aftermath of the election victory of Barack Obama, white supremacists rushed to online discussion forums to vent anger and disbelief that voters had chosen an African-American candidate as the next president of the United States.
The Anti-Defamation League (ADL), which monitors and exposes extremist activity and rhetoric, said anger among white supremacists and other right-wing extremists in response to Obama's victory resulted in an avalanche of vitriolic postings on racist Web sites. At one point, the chatter so overloaded the server of the most popular white supremacist Internet forum, Stormfront, that the site was temporarily shut down.
According to ADL, racists are incredulous that Obama was elected primarily by white voters and are seething with anger at the prospect of an America led by an African-American man.
"We always expect a reaction from the bigots when events occur that they believe are contrary to their interests and worldview," said Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director. "While it's clear that race didn't matter to the vast majority of the American people in this election, race matters to racists."
Mr. Foxman added: "The amount of invective, anger and rage being vented on white supremacist sites in the aftermath of the election is startling. Many racists are convinced that President-elect Obama's achievement means that whites have lost their place in America, and they are predicting the beginning of a race war."
The League has posted a sampling of comments from white supremacist online discussion boards and Internet forums on its Web site at http://www.adl.org/main_Extremism/rage.htm.
Well-known extremists, like former Klan leader David Duke, as well as anonymous individuals online blamed everyone from white "traitors" to Jews, minorities, and Republicans for bringing about this event and destroying their vision of a race-divided America.
The white supremacist chatter on the election has focused on several themes:

-- "Tragedy" for America: White supremacist and former Klansman
David Duke announced on an Internet radio show on election night that,
"I believe tonight is a night of tragedy and sadness for our people
in many ways ... the country is not recognizable any more."
-- Predicting a "Race War:" While some racists announced that
they would leave the United States, others suggested that Obama's
election win would provide a catalyst that would move whites to become
active racists. Some predicted the election would prove a boon to
racist recruitment efforts. Still others suggested they were planning
on arming themselves with guns and ammunition to defend themselves in a
coming "race war."
-- Calls to Violence: While making no direct threats against the
president-elect, some white supremacists expressed a hope that Obama
would be killed or die while in office. One racist referred to a recent
alleged plot by neo-Nazi skinheads to kill Obama and minorities,
expressing a hope that someone else would carry out an assassination
attempt: "... hopefully he'll get assassinated before he gets
into office. Just don't be (expletive) idiots about it like those
skinheads were," wrote "Trellen R." An anonymous poster
on white supremacist Hal Turner's blog went further: "Someone
will kill him! And I will celebrate! It's just a matter of
time."
-- Blaming Jews: Not surprisingly, many white supremacists are blaming
Jews, suggesting that Jews control U.S. government and media and promote
multiculturalism. Others suggested Jews exercised control over the Obama
campaign and the Democratic Party.

The Anti-Defamation League, founded in 1913, is the world's leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services that counteract hatred, prejudice and bigotry.

White Supremacists Fantasize That Obama Will Help Them Recruit
By Max Blumenthal, The Daily Beast
Posted on October 31, 2008, Printed on November 14, 2008
http://www.alternet.org/story/105459/

On October 27, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms announced the arrest of two young neo-Nazis, Daniel Cowart and Paul Schlesselman, who allegedly plotted to assassinate Barack Obama. The strange event suggests that a criminal element within the white supremacist movement is hell-bent on racial violence if Obama becomes president.

On the other hand, key leaders of the movement's organized front see a potential Obama administration as a rising tide that will lift their sagging boats. They hope to leverage white resentment against Obama's presidency to generate unprecedented funding, bolster membership rolls, and influence the political mainstream.

According to the ATF, Cowart and Schlesselman planned to suit up in white tuxedoes and top hats and then massacre 88 black people, 14 by decapitation, including Obama among their targets. The numbers 88 and 14 are signifiant in neo-Nazi culture: "H" is the 8th letter of the alphabet; "HH" stands for "Heil Hitler." Fourteen symbolizes the 14-word pledge of the neo-Nazi group, The Order.

Initially portrayed in media accounts as "lone wolves" without institutional affiliations, new information about the would-be assassins suggests deeper connections into the subculture of neo-Nazi thugs united by an adulation of Adolf Hitler and desire for vigilante violence. According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, one of the would-be assassins, Daniel Cowart, was a "probate member" of an incipient youth group of the neo-Nazi movement, Supreme White Alliance.

Cowart also maintained a friendship with the SWA's founder, Steven Edwards. Steven Edwards is the son of Ron Edwards, the founder of the Imperial Klans of America, a neo-Nazi outfit best known for the "Nordic Fest" white power concerts it holds at its 15-acre compound in Kentucky.

After the Southern Poverty Law Center revealed Cowart's connection to SWA, the group posted a defensive statement on its website denying his role in organizational activities. "Since [the SWA's annual election] none of the SWA members have had any contact with accused," the website declared. "So before you get your story wrong, [SPLC], get the facts." At the same time, the Supreme White Alliance acknowledged that Cowart was indeed a "probate member."

Even as it distances itself from the plot against Obama, the SWA openly advocates violence against minority groups. Its website currently posts a statement reading "Unless we have an unseen army of total Barbarians, devoid of pity, of compassion, of compunctions, of restraining moralisms, we are doomed. He who practices chivalry, when the enemy has none, fights with both hands tied behind his back. Our people must have commitment, courage, and honor fighting to free their land from the jewish scourge. Better one day as a lion, than years as a sheep."

In April 2008, Cowart and several SWA members celebrated Adolf Hitler's birthday at member's house. While there, Cowart rubbed shoulders with Joshua Steever, a 28-year-old with the word, "Racist," boldly tattooed on his forehead. In July 2006, Steever was arrested for threatening to kill two black high school students in Newark, California. A year earlier, Steever had been arrested for attacking a man with an axe handle. "He just roves around from state to state screwing with people," Daryle Jenkins, founder of the anti-racist group, One Peoples Project, told me.

Cowart's profile closely resembles that of his friend, Steever. A high school dropout who lived with his grandparents, Cowart described his mood as "bored" on a personal web page. This October, he struck out to fulfill his violent fantasies with Schlesselmann, a fellow Tennessee-based neo-Nazi he met online. Like Steever, who lashed out against students of a predominately black school, Cowart and Schlesselman planned to massacre students at an unspecified, mostly black high school. In the end, the destructive duo resorted to shooting out the front window of a black church in Brownsville, Arkansas in the dead of night before they were arrested.

The organized front of the white racist movement -- self-described "white nationalists" -- have reacted to Cowart and Schlesselman's Obama assassination plot with concern about their own exposure. White nationalists operate in the light of day seeking opportunities for mainstream influence, particularly in anti-immigration campaigning. Hapless as they may have been, Cowart and Schlesselman elevated white nationalist fears about heightened scrutiny from federal law enforcement, and threatened to sully the movement's image at a pivotal moment, when a potential African-American president offered them a chance to exploit unprecedented anti-black resentment.

On Stormfront, a white nationalist chat site with over 144,000 registered users, posters cast the plot against Obama as a mortal threat to their movement. "There are far worse things than having a black president -- for instance, killing one is far worse!" "Virginia Gentlewoman." "If anyone wants to see things get really bad for whites, then this is the way to go, folks! Might as well wrap up the whole movement and invite oppression."

"Virginia Gentlewoman," according to Daryle Jenkins, is a leading white nationalist activist named Wendy Murphy who participates in monthly discussions of white nationalist strategy at Sala Thai, a restaurant in Northern Virginia. Most activists who join her at these gatherings are members of the Council of Conservative Citizens, a racist group that evolved from the White Citizens Councils that opposed integration in the South -- known as the "Uptown Klan" because of the group's pretensions to mainstream political influence. With over 10,000 members, the CofCC is currently the country's most powerful white nationalist group.

Stormfront members who replied to Murphy's thread agreed with her almost unanimously. The plot by Cowart and Schlessman represented such a dire threat to the white movement, they reasoned it must have been a Jewish plot. "ADL [Anti-Defamation League] has already endorsed the story. One of the would-be perpetrators has a Jewish sounding name. Something like this was so predictable," a poster using the handle, Thunderhead, wrote. "It seems like a plot to defame [white nationalists] before the election," wrote another Stormfront member called "tasteofsnowflakes."

Many white nationalists who have longed for mainstream influence see unprecedented opportunity in an Obama presidency. In June, former Ku Klux Klan leader and Louisiana Republican gubernatorial candidate David Duke presented Obama's ascendancy as an encouraging prospect for the white nationalist movement. "My bet is that whether Obama wins or loses in November, millions of European Americans will inevitably react with new awareness of their heritage and the need for them to defend and advance it," Duke wrote in an manifesto called "A Black Flag for White America."

Duke, who was once the face of the white nationalist movement, sees Obama as a chance to recover some of his credibility. Duke badly damaged his reputation within white movement circles in 2000 when he entered into a business partnership with rap producer Suge Knight. In 2003 he was sentenced to fifteen months in a Texas prison for tax and mail fraud -- bilking his supporters out of thousands of dollars.

King family seeks to cash in on MLK-Obama items

ATLANTA (AP) - Zealous guardians of his words and his likeness, the family of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. is demanding a share of the proceeds from the sudden wave of T-shirts, posters and other merchandise depicting the civil rights leader alongside Barack Obama.

Isaac Newton Farris Jr., King's nephew and head of the nonprofit King Center in Atlanta, said the estate is entitled to hundreds of thousands of dollars in licensing fees - maybe even millions.

"Some of this is probably putting food on people's plates. We're not trying to stop anybody from legitimately supporting themselves," he said, "but we cannot allow our brand to be abused."

But while Obama's election as the first black president may be the fulfillment of King's dream and could yield a big windfall for his estate, policing his image and actually collecting any fees could prove to be a legal nightmare because of the great proliferation of unauthorized King-Obama paraphernalia, much of it sold by street vendors.
