Can someone tell me why it is very offensive for a person to call a Latin American a Mexican?

I called a close friend of mine a Mexican and he had a fit and wanted to fight and told me to never refer to him as as being a Mexican and that it was an insult and other Latin Americans say the same why?

I saw a Mexican in Walmart spit & blow a hunk of snot out of his nose on the floor in the produce section and he knew people were watching him.

Is their laws prohibiting this?

You know, Geromino, I asked a friend of my son's friend what the difference was in Latino and Mexican. He is Mexican. He told me that Latinos were "below" the Mexicans. Other than that, he gave no explanation.

All I know from dealing between the Latino and the Mexican (through different sources), I found that the Mexican man "owned his woman," but the Latino thought he was better than the Mexican. Which makes no sense to me...I don't know...it's like saying, "I'm better than you, but our blood is still red..."

You got me on this one...I think the Latinos are more heart-warming people, but then, again...I've got a lot of friends/neighbors that are Mexican and they are no different from black, yellow, red and white.

The point though is..just like you asked, why do the Latinos and Mexican's despise one another...I really do not know. I would think their culture blends, and they would be amongst the best of friends.

I don't like to use our backgrounds (white, black, yellow, red, green), but I did often wonder myself...why do these two groups who have such common background culture, despise one another?

Remember Salina....my gosh...she was such a beautiful person - how her life took off and she crossed over to Mexico and back to the USA, only to get shot by someone of her own culture...that stole from her.

I do know Salina was Mexican-American; her father warned her that the Mexican's would probably not accept her in Mexico...but she proved him wrong - she won the hearts of both Americans and Mexicans...she learned to sing in Spanish. I don't know what it means....I guess it's ok if you were born here and stay here, but the moral of the story I got from her dad in that movie said, "The Mexicans do not accept American Mexicans."

I'd like to know myself why any culture should be glaring at the other. To me, it's not the color of the skin, it's how you act and react, regardless.

Are you a Hispanic or a Latino? We have been asking ourselves this question since the seventies when the government adopted the term "Hispanic" to keep population statistics and monitor compliance to Affirmative Action laws.

And the answer isn't as clear-cut as one might expect. Choosing one term over the other means taking a political, social, and even a generational stand.

Stereotypically, those who call themselves Hispanic are more assimilated, conservative, and young, while those who choose the term Latino tend to be liberal, older, and sometimes radical.

A recent presidential tracking poll by Hispanic Trends, Inc., a polling firm associated with this magazine, wanted to put the identity issue to rest once and for all by asking registered voters which term they preferred-Hispanic or Latino. The result was something of a surprise: A majority prefer the term Hispanic.

Sergio Bendixen, president of Hispanic Trends, says his company decided to put the question in its poll for obvious reasons. "It's something Hispanics and Latinos have been debating for years, and no one seems to have asked the question. So we decided to ask it," he says.

Of the 1,200 Latino registered voters polled, 65 percent preferred the term Hispanic, and 30 percent chose to identify themselves as Latino. Regionally, the results were similar. This random sample showed that 67 percent of Mexican Americans in Texas preferred the term Hispanic, as did 52 percent of Latinos in California and New York.

Bendixen, who has been conducting polls for 25 years, says the results surprised him. "I thought the term Latino would be the overwhelming winner, because I've worked in California for Univisión and Telemundo, and I was not allowed to say Hispanic on the air. When I did, we got a lot of complaints."

Mr. G, are you a color? A negro? A Black? An african? Obama is not black, he's a color man, a mulatto. Why call this bozo black? Why denied his WHITE mother, who was an easy lay for some villager in africa? Did you all know that us Mexicans have named black people, negro(black in Spanish) or mulatto, which means, MULE in SPANISH? The question is, why did WE Mexicans named a half-blackk/white person a mule?

I suggest you prescribe to the "American School," start at the third grade level and pay until you at least pass high school.

Mexicans look alike. Hispanics do not look like Mexicans....I didn't have to take a course to know the difference.

Just as Italians resemble Mexicans, somewhat...they don't carry the heritage nor cook or act like them...you are the breed you are. Big nose, or not. Be proud of whomever you are: black, white, yellow, green or red.

We are who we are, and we have to accept who we are. Also, everyone has their own heritage....just be proud of who you are; make no apologies....and once you accept yourself...you accept others.

I lived for two years in China (one in Beijing, one in Nanjing) and the spitting never made much of an impression on me. Though I remember once travelling by bus just outside Tibet, where the entire bus was hawking loogies on the bus floor as we were waiting for the bus to depart. They could have at least spit out the window, but no, it had to be the floor of the bus that we were to spend the next three days in. Also, the preferred method of clearing a stuffy nose (press one nostril, blow hard through other) infuriates me.
