MERRILLVILLE | Firefighters are battling a blaze at the Star Plaza Theatre after a curtain caught fire during a performance.
The fire started about 8:10 p.m. during the Shanghai Circus Live show.
Witnesses said smoke could be seen coming from behind a curtain on the right side of the stage before it caught fire and became fully engulfed.
Witnesses reported pushing and pulling as people tried to make their way from the balcony area. One man said he could see ripples of flames going up the ceiling.
People were directed out of the theater before firefighters arrived on the scene.
Witnesses said everyone in the audience appeared to have made it out of the building safely.
