A homeowner shouted at a passer-by who took digital pictures of the property ruins and slammed a wooden chair on the pavement, while others watched the confrontation.

Soon after the incident, Munster police officers showed up to monitor the scene.

Cynthia Brewer of Gary has been furious and uncertain about insurance coverage.

Brewer lives with her mother in the 3400 block of Connecticut Street. The flooded basement caused the foundation to crack, she said.

Brewer said she has been exhausted dealing with her mother's insurance and worries that their policy won't cover damages.

Until the confusion gets resolved, the family requested the insurance company be unnamed, for fear of litigation.

"It's bad enough finding a way to fix the floor," Brewer said. "At least the freezer and refrigerator work."

A few houses down, Antonio Muhammad spent Saturday with his family to help clean.

He said he's been running an electric pump for four days. Muhammad said he doesn't have insurance.

The basement flooded and has water up to two feet high. Among the destroyed items are two deep freezers, exercise equipment, a water heater and a washer and dryer.

Gary Fire Department officials and Northern Indiana Public Service Co. workers responded to a resident near the intersection of 34th Avenue and Connecticut Street. Fire officials said she wanted the electricity shut off for fear of electrical danger with water standing waist high inside the house.

The area near the intersection still has several feet of standing water with no place to drain, officials said. Fire Chief Jeffrey Ward said additional trucks and firefighters were sent to the neighborhood in case of an emergency and to see if other homes had to have electricity and gas shut off.

Gee I bet the people in question do not have flood insurance and instead only have homeowners insurance, which does not cover flood damages

Flood insurance is more expensive then homeowners, thus the reason why very few actually get it
