While surfing on the web, I stumbled across what one would describe as an amazing discovery.

The Sterk's Super Foods and the Strack & Val Til's chains are owned by the same Chicago-based grocery cooperative.

Now doesn't it make you wonder why good supermarkets are difficult to find in Gary proper, Wilco notwithstanding?

Strack and Van Til's and Sterk's are not owned by the same people. They may buy some of their product from the same co-op, but they have different owners. There was a controversy when the new Strack and Van Tils was built in downtown Hammond because Sterk's felt they should have
been chosen to build there. The Redevelopement commission bought the
Sterk's that was at that location, tore it down and Strack's and Walgreen's built there.

Independent NWI grocers like Wise Way, Sterk's, and Strack & Van Til buy from one of two large co-ops: Certified or Centrella. Certified has its own private label called Country's Delight. Centrella uses its own name for its private label. Check for these private labels, and you'll know from which co-op a Chicago-area independent grocer is buying.
