GARY -- The blockbuster "Transformers" movie franchise could be coming to Gary.

A film crew is expected to ask Gary's Board of Public Works and Safety for permission today to shoot scenes for "Transformers 3" here on April 13.

The filming would take place at property owned by Majestic Star Casino at Buffington Harbor.

Ben Clement, who volunteers as the director of Gary's office of Film and Television, said producer Michael Bay visited Gary in December.

"I've been working with these guys for a few months now," Clement said.

The crew would use industrial property to the east of Majestic Star for a scene meant to take place in Russia, Clement said.

The scene could be used to introduce one of the film's main characters, the leader of the peace-seeking Transformers, to the movie.

"It's a very, very quick scene," Clement said, adding that more scenes could be shot in Gary in the future.

Majestic Star officials didn't return calls for comment.

"Transformers 3" is slated for release in 2011.

The latest installment in the series about warring alien robots is expected to star John Malkovich and Frances McDormand in addition to Megan Fox and Shia LaBeouf.

None of the principal actors is expected at the Gary shoot, though.

The Gary City Council set new filming fees for moviemakers last year. They include a $50 application fee and a feature-film fee of $500 per location, per day.

If approved, "Transformers 3" would be Bay's second feature film shot in Gary in two years.

Scenes for the upcoming "Nightmare on Elm Street" movie were filmed at Gary's City Methodist Church and in the 400 block of Tyler Street in 2009.

That film opens April 30.

I wonder why they think Gary is similar to Russia? Maybe they outta film a city council meeting instead. And instead of pyrotechnics they can use some real explosive charges to help renovate the city. Now that would be change I could believe in! :smt003

Oh yes! Another family values orientated film to be proud of I see. [/sarcasm

Well I guess money won out over moral integrity. I don't watch gory horror films and don't think churches should have anything to do with them. But maybe that's just me.

GARY -- Filmmakers getting ready to shoot a scene for "Transformers 3" in Gary are keeping some details of their project under wraps.

The city's Board of Public Works and Safety approved a filming permit for the movie at its meeting Wednesday.

Controller Celita Green said filming will take place April 12 on industrial property owned by Majestic Star Casino at Buffington Harbor.

The scene will be shot during daylight hours, Green said, and will involve a crew of about 60 people. Al Cohn, the film's location manager, said the set will be closed to the public.

Cohn also said he'd prefer not to provide the board with a copy of the agreement between the filmmakers and Majestic Star, offering a letter from the casino instead.

"My preference would be, you know, to keep it off the public record," Cohn said of the agreement.

However, Green said the movie crew will shoot a "rather simple scene" portraying vehicles approaching the industrial property. The scene is meant to take place in Ukraine.

Filmmakers paid the city $550 in filming fees.

Larry Buck, Majestic Star's general manager, said the movie crew will film at the former Lehigh cement plant on his company's property.

He also said he's been asked several logistical questions about the shoot, including where the crew will eat and sleep.

"Given our business, I think we can accommodate a lot of their needs," Buck said.

"Transformers 3" is the latest installment in a movie franchise about alien robots that transform into vehicles.

"It's a robotic battle where the good guys win," Cohn said.

None of the principal stars of the movie, including John Malkovich, Frances McDormand, Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox, is expected to be on the set.

However, Cohn wouldn't rule out further scenes being filmed in Gary in the future.

"If we do, it will probably be more with the principal unit," Cohn said.

Gary should have demanded a new transformation cog for their city. I think Gary is stuck in robot mode. You can't preform if you can't transform!!

I wonder if we can talk the gang taggers into painting deceptacon symbols all over Gary to save the taxpayers from paying for it?

In the original series there was a transformer that was ruler of a garbage heap. Sounds more approbate for Gary.

http://tfwiki.net/wiki/Wreck-Gar_(G1)

This article is about the Junkion from Generation 1. For the garbage truck from Transformers Animated, see Wreck-Gar (Animated).

Wreck-Gar is the leader of the Junkions, a tribe (or possibly race) of junk-robot Transformers who call the planet Junkion "home sweet home". Like all Junkions, Wreck-Gar's speech is a hodge-podge mish-mash of phrases taken from Earth broadcasting, especially television, which has become the focal point of Junkion culture. He is generally suspicious of strangers, but once he considers you a friend, he's a steadfast and selfless individual. He oversees his people's daily activities of "sorting" through their planet's collection of scrap, though what basis they use to sort the material has yet to be identified. He seems to have some sort of relationship with a Junkion lady named Nancy.

In battle, Wreck-Gar is easy to knock down, but near-impossible to keep down, thanks to the very unique physiology of the Junkions. He tends to lose pieces easily when he takes damage, but he can repair that damage with lightning speed, and it's possible that even if he's reduced to a pile of parts it's only a short time before he's back on his feet again swinging his axe. This rapid-healing ability reaches almost instantaneous speed on his home planet of Junk, or anywhere he can get his hands on scrap metal. Many would-be conquerors have mistaken the Junkions for harmless idiots. Most of them are currently scattered across the rusted surface of Junk.

John Malkovich ready to get his 'hands dirty' for 'Transformers 3'

John Malkovich formally signed on to star alongside Shia LaBeouf and the robots of the second sequel to "Transformers," because of producers Lorenzo Di Bonaventura and Mark Vahradian -- and the laughs.

"I’d seen the first ['Transformers'], which I liked and thought it was funny," Malkovich says in an interview. "Lorenzo and Mark... approached me about it. I like working with them very much. They’re very good producers, they’re very hands-on, always around, really get their hands dirty -- which is not so normal."

"[Malkovich] is going to have a lot of interaction with Shia in that movie," says Di Bonaventura. He and Vahradian have been working closely with the "Jonah Hex" actor on forthcoming action flick "Red" with Bruce Willis, which just wrapped shooting in New Orleans. "And he’s got a really fun character. And he’s going to bring a really interesting spin to that franchise, so it’s going to be great."

Now that the "Transformers" films have proven to reap big box office benefits, Di Bonaventura isn't worried about the budget or the timeline at which "Transformers 3" is shot with director Michael Bay.

"[Producers] spend an inordinate amount of time explaining ourselves to people on every movie and all that," but, "not with [Bay], y'know? Bay is such a general that it moves at his pace. The first movie, we had to explain a lot of why we wanted to spend this, what was going on…dah dah dah. They’re all running in a difficult time right now and they’re concerned about their careers and concerned about the results. I grew up in the Warner Brothers system and our philosophy was once we made our bet, we sort of stuck to it. Which meant it’s up to the filmmakers to deliver it."

Malkovich will soon be seen in "Secretariat" and the aforementioned comic book movie "Jonah Hex" this year. He and his production company Mr. Mudd are also backing "Jeff Who Lives At Home," a stoner comedy featuring Jason Segel and Ed Helms.

"It’s something that Jason Reitman developed. We did 'Juno' with him and he asked us to produce it," Malkovich said of the film.
