Democrats want Ind. AG to reconsider health suit

INDIANAPOLIS | One day after Attorney General Greg Zoeller said Indiana would join a multistate lawsuit to stop federal health care reform, Democratic leaders in the General Assembly are asking Zoeller to reconsider.

In a letter delivered to Zoeller on Tuesday, House Speaker Patrick Bauer, D-South Bend, said given the state's current budget difficulties, it doesn't make sense to spend scarce taxpayer dollars on a health reform lawsuit.

"I believe Indiana's participation will only lead to sharing the cost of the litigation and in no way influence the outcome of a lawsuit to which 13 other states had already joined," Bauer said.

The speaker also demanded a full accounting of all taxpayer dollars spent on the case.

Senate Democratic Leader Vi Simpson, D-Ellettsville, said Zoeller's time would be better spent trying to recover the $200 million she claims is owed to the state by IBM as part of the terminated contract to run some Family and Social Services Administration programs.

"The Attorney General should be pursuing that, which would be a real asset for the taxpayers of the state instead of wasting time and resources on this," Simpson said.

On Monday, Zoeller announced Indiana would join a federal lawsuit challenging the individual mandate requirement of the health reform legislation. Under the new law, starting in 2014 all Americans will have to purchase health insurance or pay a fine.

Zoeller said he believes it's unconstitutional for the federal government to require Americans to purchase a commercial product.

A spokesman for the attorney general said Zoeller plans to formally tell Bauer today that no state money has been used for the lawsuit.

"The work on this has been done in-house by salaried employees who'd be paid their same salaries anyway," said Zoeller spokesman Bryan Corbin.

Does this clown not understand that Indiana and every other state has a great stake in the burden Obamacare places on state resources? I guess our state Dems didn't read the bill either. :P

While admittedly it is difficult to take one issue to condemn an entire party I think state Dems have made their mentality quite clear. They wish to support Obama no matter how outlandish the scheme.

Never mind that Obamacare is unconstitutional on many points and is being challenged with more challenges to come and that it's implementation can be like a gateway drug to more Federal abuses of power this legislation is flawed in it's assumptions, aspirations, and expectations. Put in simple terms - it doesn't work.

I am happy that Indiana is joining the chorus of challenges to this Spruce Goose. Well at least the Goose could fly a little bit but this turkey of a purported healthcare reform is doomed to crash & burn.

In case you don't recall the Goose here is a link. I didn't realize they kept sinking money into it after it was scrapped though. Sounds like a perfect analogy!
