We determine what your home would sell for if you had to sell in the next 10 minutes, then send you a bill for 10% of that number. But to make it easier to pay we want to take some of it right out of your paycheck via a local income tax so that you never worry about the real cost. ;)

Now I think to be more fair about it we need to do the same with cars, bicycles, and kids wagons to pay for the socialism spending. Anything of value really. Whatever you own you get an annual 10% tax bill on the market value. That way the folks with the most stuff pay the most for other people to have stuff. :P

Seriously though I think that is one of my biggest oppositions to an appraisal based tax which is really supposed to pay for core government services anyway. Just because your home is more valued than some guy down the street does not mean that the cost of cops, fire protection, or schools is any better for the expense. So it's just an excuse to soak the rich. Or should I say perceived rich, as folks in Miller and Whiting know all too well. When questioning their soaring property tax bills some posters on the old board said just sell your home to someone who can afford them taxes. Remember that?

Didn't feel like making a new thread so I thought I would add it to this one...

State denies property tax exemption to Portage Chamber
Quote:
VALPARAISO | The Greater Portage Chamber of Commerce has failed to convince the state to overrule a local board and grant the group tax-exempt status for its downtown office building.

The Indiana Board of Tax Review said the chamber did not meet its obligation of showing that more than half of the building at 2642 Eleanor St. and/or its operations are dedicated to charitable purposes.

Now...go after all the other chambers in the state!
