Jurors convict Burge of perjury, obstruction

He is now one of them.
The type of men he boasted about taking off the streets. Some he even called "human garbage."
Jon Burge -- a former Chicago Police lieutenant and decorated Vietnam War veteran -- is a convicted felon.
"This is a long, long time coming, but there's finally been an official recognition of this sordid episode of Chicago history," said Rob Warden of Northwestern University's Innocence Project.
Warden was referring to the millions of dollars in lawsuits and wrongful convictions that tarnished Burge but that did not prevent him from living a relatively comfortable life in Apollo Beach, Fla.
"Justice was delayed, but, ultimately, not denied," Warden said.
Burge, 62, showed no emotion, his hands folded, when a federal jury found him guilty Monday afternoon of lying under oath about torturing African-American criminal suspects at the Area 2 police headquarters. The perjury was part of a 2003 civil lawsuit filed by former Death Row inmate Madison Hobley. Burge was found guilty of two counts of obstruction of justice and one count of perjury and could face up to 45 years in prison when he sentenced in November.
