Winfield population almost doubles

WINFIELD | The number of town residents has nearly doubled since the 2000 census.

What that means for the town is cold, hard cash.

Cash to do some of the things the town hopes to get done, such as repairing streets and roads, hiring a town manager or hiring another office clerk. However, no decision has been made on how the money will be spent.

Clerk-Treasurer Rick Anderson said Winfield received a letter estimating the number of residents at 3,880 following a special census this summer.

Winfield leaders asked for the special census count because they maintained the town had grown tremendously, and they want the tax dollars that come with that growth until the next regular census in 2010.

The really good news is that the town has grown a little more than 91 percent and during the next four years -- 2007 to 2010 -- the town should see more than $400,000, about $100,000 each year, Anderson said.

There are many funds based on population, such as the state's alcohol and cigarette tax fund and gaming fund. A portion of the streets and roads money is based on population.

"We spent between $90,000 to $95,000 on the special census, but we will recoup that in the first year," Anderson said.

By 2010, Winfield officials believe the community could have as many as 7,300 residents. Already the number of building permits issued is up this year compared to last year at the same time. Anderson expects the town will have issued 130 building permits by the year's end.

Winfield Town Councilwoman Paulette Skinner, who worked hard to get the census completed, said she's pleased the process was done.

"The residents were very receptive," Skinner said. "It took a little longer than I anticipated but we got it done and it was to the town's benefit."
