Siam Marina is one of my favorite places in the area. The owners recently opened an upscale version in Merrillville called Asparagus -- the food is essentially the same as at Siam Marina, but the prices are almost double! I guess they are planning to make their money on people staying at Star Plaza. I hope they succeed, but it will not be due to me...
Is Asparagus Thai as well?
My wife works near Star of Siam in the city and I thoroughly enjoyed their food. Never thought I would like it, but its very good.
Star of Siam has been around for a long time, and it's pretty good (food and value) if somewhat Americanized. If you want to try authentic (and sensational) Thai food in Chicago, go to either TAC Quick or Spoon Thai.
Asparagus is Thai food, but based on reports from two people who dined there, it has more French influence than what you will find at most Thai restaurants. (There is a French influence in pretty much all Thai food due to France's occupation of the country for almost 200 years. Same with Vietnamese food.) The food was said to be very good but a poor value. I checked out a menu the last time I was in the area, and it's very similar to the Siam Marina menu. But with $10+ appetizers and $25+ entrees at Asparagus, I'll go to Siam Marina instead.
