Post subject:  El Taco Real - Hammond

Located 900 block of Hoffman Ave across the street from Irving school.

I grew up eating there at least once a week and loved it. But success comes at a price, I guess. I normally order take out since it's only a few blocks away. Perhaps you have to dine in to get the good stuff?

To me, the taste & quality have suffered as the customer count rose. The last few times I ordered I wished I'd made my own meal. The last order had the wrong main course but I didn't feel like going back to get it corrected. Sorry I didn't because it was really bad; cold, greasy, and tasted bad.

I'd love to have only nice things to say. The owner is a really great guy and is active in trying to make Hammond a better place. But I have been ordering less frequently with each order the last few years.

I have always enjoyed the food there, however we tend to go out to
eat on Fridays and Saturdays and I am no longer willing to be packed like
a sardine in the entryway, waiting to put my name on the list for a table.
He should either expand the place or relocate to a location where he can provide better customer service.

Actually I think he did both - and they still keep coming. He expanded that location as much as possible unless the houses next door come available and I believe he has a location in South County. I know he talked about doing it for years but I haven't a clue where it's at.

Give 'em a call and ask if they have another location. It might not be quite as crowded there.

I tried Chela's last year and it wasn't too bad.

You really need to travel more!

When you fly to Nashville just to get a good BBQ sandwich we'll talk. ;)

I am a Sagittarius, I was bit by the travel bug from birth and I can never get enough...however I prefer roadtrips and boat trips over flying anytime!

Though I've not traveled to Nashville for a BBQ sandwhich, I have made the trip to Knoxville for a BBQ rib dinner at Calhoun's On The River, better than Carson's and I love Carson's.

I've also driven 15 hours to the Northern Highland's of Wisconsin for the world's best taco pizza and glass of 'real' beer... and then 5 hours out of the way back home to stop for the best smoked fish and jerky I've ever come across in my life!

Again, I've always been lucky with Taco Real... I guess it helps to mention that you're writing a review about your experience when placing your order...just kiddin'...I guess it's because I'm a lucky girl!

So hey, let's talk about the places we've eaten at outside of the region, in a new thread... I'll go start one up :D

El Taco Real has some of the best authentic mexican food.. My wife practically grew up there and she introduced me to the place when we started dating.. I've ate there 10+ times and have only been unsatisfied once.. (for some reason the enchilladas were bad that day!)

To clarify, Taco Real is NOT authentic mexican food. It IS authentic gringo mexican food. :P

And Tony, so ok you are bitten by the food travel bug as well. But of course as a Scorpio I must be suspicous of your claims and guarded about my own. ;)

But I'll be darned if at my age I'm gonna road trip to Maderia Beach, FL just for fresh grouper when there's a perfectly good airplane that can take me there cheaper, faster, better! lol

Gee, and I thought it a big deal when I lived on campus downstate when we'd drive to Effingham, IL for all you could eat steak dinner or Indy for White Castles. :D

:D Ahhhh....I see. I too am suspicious by nature... however, I believe you when you tell me you had a crave :D

My grandfather, father, and uncle are all pilots...I've had my fill of flying...don't get me wrong, I love getting up in the air...
...but I just don't like to miss all the sights

P.S.
It's no secret that I like my Mexican food a little on the gringo side

Wow, not only do we get to see pictures of the first fat food drive thru,
but we are also treated to two more pictures of Tom! It doesn't get much better than that!

Is this generally considered the best Mexican food in the region?

No, not by a long shot! From a very good source, El Taco Real is considered "good Mexican food for white people".
The best authentic Mexican food in the area is, Cocula's in Calumet City!

Oh yeah, I know where Cocula's is. My wife used to live right down the street before we were married. Never been there, but I'll give it a try.

I thought Cal City isn't considered part of the "region" though?
