Oh yeah, I know where Cocula's is. My wife used to live right down the street before we were married. Never been there, but I'll give it a try.

I thought Cal City isn't considered part of the "region" though?

Watch it! I have some close friends who still live in Calumet City, and they are very proud of their home.

My wife grew up there (Cal City) and is proud of it also. Thats not what I meant. I meant NWI as the "region". Isn't that what people (natives) call the Northwest Indiana area?

La Carretta in Merrillville is my current favorite. Hard to find but great food and giant Margaritas!

I'd say something about that but this is supposed to be about El Taco Real.

Personally I don't see why it remains so popular. The atmosphere I guess.

Here is a review of El Taco Real that ran in the Post-Tribune.This part of the review says all you really need to know
about El Taco Real.
While there are Mexican eateries with claims to deliver greater heat or more native authenticity, El Taco Real and its popularity long have set the region's standard. Sometimes I've waited an hour for a table and unfortunately reservations aren't accepted. Luckily, the bar is cool and the drinks are refreshing and while you wait you can read the reviews and accolades awarded this fine Mexican restaurant in the last three decades.

I hardly think that's explaining it too much but generally it goes back to what I was saying about atmosphere. I've been to many other restaurants where the taste was better but without nearly the volume. I would say it's probably comparable to Don Pablos but with a smaller room.

Now if you were to compare the taste of their food in the 1st 10 years it was 2nd to none as was the price but today it's just ok IMO. But of course food taste is only part of a dining experience and El Taco Real probably always will have a name value just as Phil Smitts did even in it's declining years.

I'm surprised nobody's mentioned it but the prices just went up again.

I should try that place across the street again. I ordered there once and it was ok but it's under new management now, so it's worth a shot. Not nearly as crowded anyway.
