Post subject:  Lute Barn Bar

Does anyone remember the "Lute Barn Bar" on Lute Road in Portage. I remember it being there briefly during the mid "70's". Seems to me that it burned down. Anyone have more details?

The Lute Barn Bar sounds like a bit before my time (maybe) as I am 42. Where was the barn located on Lute?
As of now, there are only two barns remaining on Lute Road. One is behind a farmhouse that is atop the hill/rise in the roadway just a block or so west of the north entrance to the Portage High School (the barn is on the northside of the road and is in tremendous disrepair).

There is another barn that looks to be in much better shape further west on Lute Road. This barn is on the south side of the road and is still surrounded by undeveloped land and fields (bordered on the west side by Swanson Court Apts.). If this was the bar.......the building still looks pretty solid and is off the roadway a bit. It still has the silo. The red paint on the barn is very, very faded at this point and, as a result, pretty much looks pink.

What time period was the Lute Barn Bar in business?

I remember it being on Lute Road around 75,76 or 77, exactly where, I'm not sure. It was a barn converted to a bar, and I do believe it burned down. I've got a friendly wager with my neighbor, who says it never existed. Does any one else remember it or have more information on it?

Check with the Portage Historical Society.

It was a large barn located on the old Lute Farm--one of the original settlers of Portage. One of the largest barns in Porter County.

It was located on the corner of Lute Road and Willowcreek, except when it existed as a farm, Willowcreek ended at Lute Road.

Willowcreek was just a dirt road at one time from Stone (29th Avenue) to Lute.

Someone bought the place and tried to turn the barn into a bar/restaurant. I believe the fire that burnt the place was suspicious at the time.

I remember my ex-sister-in-law worked at the bar/barn for awhile...

This is the link for the society.

There will be a festival in June. Come on over and check out the museum.

There will be food and crafts, among other things.
