Nice to know the CE head honcho thinks the city has never looked better. We are screwed if this guy thinks this is true. God help us.

I guess things have changed over the years. In the past around 30 to 40 years ago, the city of Hammond and other surrounding towns were on a rampage to demolish old buildings and some buildings that were in good shape. How it worked the demolition company took care of the building inspectors and then it funneled down to the bosses.
The goverment tried to indict with these charges and tried to get one contractor, that had the majority of the area business to talk. He wouldn't so a federal Judge gave him a rather long jail time for a "contempt of court" ruling. This never hit the media, it was a secret confinement. The old practice was if a job was $3000.00 dollars, they billed the cities $6000.00 So the officials got the extra 3 grand which was big money in those days. Many local area politicians sweated out that time as the guy was in jail. He never squealed on anyone. To protect himself, he wrote every detail in a daily journal. Where that journal is today is something, many would like to know. The guy is dead now, but his office and home was broken into several times and nothing taken. Three weeks after he was released from prison, the Judge who was in good health died unexpectantly. Some beautyful buildings were just destroyed for the want of money.

I wish they would have focused on downtown Hammond.
