They have made every attempt to improve downtown Hammond and have done everything to attract people, but it takes only a few things to destroy any groundwork that has been done. For three days last week, the Hammond Police have stationed two Motorcycle officers and one squad car to arrest motorist in the area for seat belt and other violations. All them are making u turns in the middle of the street to make the arrests and in turn making motorist mad. Many call it a plain speed trap also. Standing in the new parking lot, you can see them chasing motorist time after time in Stracks parking lot. If this keeps up, motorist will avoid the downtown area. There are plenty of areas to conduct these stops, plus when they do make these stops the police block at least one lane and sometimes two lanes and this causes a traffic jam.

Sorry JJ, you are usually insightful, but you are way, way off here. The traffic situation in Downtown Hammond has been fraught with accidents, near accidents and serious road rage since the construction began. Anyone who walks or drives here has found the Hammond Police Department a Godsend these days. The scofflaws are all (and I mean all) Illinois drivers who are ignoring clear no turn signs and even red lights. By ignoring the traffic signals they are backing up traffic from Sibley all the way down to St. Margaret’s hospital. I am not certain why you are supporting people from out-of-state who would never think of driving in such a manner in their home state. If they are unwilling to adhere to the most basic driving laws, we don’t need them here.

DD, you mean all the residents of Hammond who still have their Illinois plates and drivers license.

Or are you referring to the road rage and drunk Driving that occurs after the dance club closes.
