Nothing like maintaining what little property values are left. This helps a great deal.

This has got to be someone with a city contract. One of four windows boarded up? Why bother, unless you bill 100% and only provide 25% services.

Right down the street from me. It has been empty for 2 years, and raccoons are living in the house. It is a shame. This was a nice house at one time.

Someone emailed me about the two properties below.

the picture above I was told the house is abandoned, no power no gas and the garage burnt down. The house to the right of the this picture is abandoned as well. Nothing boarded up.

This property appears abandoned. looks like charring around the steps and to the left of the back door.

Is that gang grafitti on the back door?

this just south of downtown hammmond.

Hmmmmm... do we have someone setting fires?

This is absolute proof college bound is working just like someone said it would.

Or is this part of the $52,000,000 Marquette plan?

Found in the times posting about a crime watch meeting. The article confirms there is an arsonist operating in the central hammond.

HAMMOND | The Harrison Park Crime Watch will meet at 5 p.m. Wednesday at the VFW Hall, 5820 Hohman Ave.

The guest speaker is Phil Taillon, executive director of the Department of Planning and Development for the city.

There also will be a representative from the city gang-fighting unit and a discussion about recent garbage can and garage fires in the neighborhood.

i find it interesting the grafitti is still on this building. must be the overwhelming success of college bound brining residents into hammond. that pride of ownership.

found in an hammond times article, after 6 1/2 years of your tax dollar used to educate hammond's kids, out of 460 college bound participants, 60 have graduated... Woopie!

Note no address on the garage. How would x be able to find it if a emergency existed?

Now something I don't understand, how either of these properties haven't been dealt with. Both indicate years of neglect.

Now, I hope to god this building is not occupied. Looks like a very temp fix.

Hope it is not a rental, as the only persons who would rent this would be the disadvantaged.

If it is a homeowner, the previous administation, use to have a program to help individuals under a certain income. I think that program went bye bye a long time ago.

Not like the program that was giving $30,000 away to business people who hired staff. I wonder who were the lucky few who part took of that program and if an aduit assured continual employment, per the grant guidelines.

Hell this is hammond, we don't need no stinkin audit.

Tom has got to be proud of this one! I wonder if it is a rental?

After reviewing some of these pictures, they depict years and years of neglect, someone ignoring the obvious facts,

something I dont understand.

2 doors down from me. :( Foreclosure. It has been empty for over a year. There are holes in the roof, and some water damage on the inside. The people owed more on it than what it was worth. The husband was off work a lot, due to his medical problems. They just couldn't do it financially anymore, and walked away. I have been checking the listings, and it is not listed for sale. If it doesn't get new owners soon, is will probably get torn down, like the house directly across the street from this one. I will say that the mortgage company did cover the roof with plastic tarp, and have been there regularly to check on the house, mow the lawn, etc.

18th out of 300, not too bad.

Let the city buy this one, while it is still salvageable. It has a big yard, and a 2 car garage that is realitively new. The water damage on the inside, so far, is confined to one room. The kitchen has all new cabinets, but needs to have the ceramic tile floor replaced/repaired. Most of the rest of the house has hardwood floors in very good shape. The roof is the most expensive item to be fixed. The house does have central air, and the yard is fenced in. The front porch is real nice, too, and it has a deck on the back.

It is a sad day, when the primary form of reinvestment in a community comes from a federal grant used to rehab foreclosed and abandoned homes, instead of from the private sector. Sounds a bit more like Gary and East Chicago, than a thriving community.
I don't think you will find Munster, St. John or other similar cities with a need for such a lofty welfare program.

Just look at the pictures in this thread, all were taken in the last four months. How could some of these properties be so over looked for so long unless.....

From public published numbers there are 455 plus homes on the market with 25 that have sold in Hammond. Only two have sold for over $100,000 and one of the two sold for $105,000. For the most part, the only market in Hammond is buying up foreclosures for less than $30,000.

Tom's claim that College Bound is bringing people into Hammond has absolutely no statistical or other proof that CB has provided any benefit to Hammond's Housing stock. The Program itself has serious unanswered questions.
Thanks to a Hammond Times Report asking a tough question of Courtney Saczawa, College Bound Program Coordinator, in the last 6 ½ years, out of 460 College Bound participants, 60 have graduated! This is 1/3 the answer to CB’s success or lack thereof. The other two questions are has this program provided really brought residents into Hammond? The last Census indicated an overall reduction in Hammond’s Census. The last question and most important is what are the cost?

Is this what Hammond is all about? 10181

This is more than 8 years of neglect.
