I thought it was exceptionally unfair to have the title of this thread, is Tom doing his job.

This thread was started Wed Aug 17, 2011 7:38 pm, and it was originally titled, "Is Tom doing his job?"

Then it was changed to "Is Hammond on the verge of a Renaissance?" The Renaissance began when Tom became Mayor. Hammond now has a staggering $178,000,000 of debt, despite $35,000,000 of Casino Revenue fore each and every year McDermott has been Mayor.

Tom McDermott has also continued the high cost of Hammond's bonds by not dealing with our fiscal crisis, Hammond has a Baa bond credit rating, just above junk bond rating.

So recently, August 2013, not seeing much of a change in Hammond, other than the opening of a new fire works stand, Tom giving one of North America's most profitable Corporations $10,000,000 with no spending restrictions, giving more money to a gas station operator, renting out a building purchased by a campaign contributor, who in turn sold the building, for what appears to be an inflated value for $1,000,000 to Purdue, I thought I would change the title of the thread to Hammond Renaissance? Tom McDermott Jr's Standards.

People in Hammond are still living in basic substandard housing. This draws the economically depressed resident, who will live in a substandard property, because it is all they can afford.

After 11 years, this is how Hammond still looks.

When hubby worked there, it was the land of soap and corn syrup - some smelly product.

Indy Blvd just south of the Casino

Very endearing to Casino Visitors. Looks more like neglect.

The weeds are part of McDermott's new $150,000 beautification program.

I wonder if the Horticulturist Tiger mentioned in another post got paid to plan these weeds?

I see it this as very inviting to Hammond visitors.

Note the graffitti? This is a new welcome to Hammond sign, McDermott style, as an entrance into Wolf Lake!

What an eyesore, just down the street from the Casino.

BTW, construction material has been left at this site now for months after the project has been completed.

Are there any photos of the $1,000,000 flower beds that were such a priority a year or two ago or are they obscurred by the four-foot tall weeds? What's the difference though....I guess plants are plants.

And has Spunky been out to this area with his tape measure or are overgrown lawns in Munster keeping him busy enough?

The only job McDermott, Jr., is doing is screwing up the City of Hammond. And I will add he is doing an excellent job of it.

Too bad the citizens of Hammond will probably give him another four years to screw up the city some more.

As for those weeds, I wonder if that bridge is state property? If so, it's not likely that the state will cut the weeds as a means of erosion control. And assuming the state owns that bridge, then city is not likely to cut the weeds for fear of being scolded by IDOT. But then since when does Jr. care what the state has to say?

Gate way to Downtown Hammond near South Shore

Users of the South Shore see this on a daily basis.

Now this must be McDermott's experiment increasing Hammond green space. Sure is inviting!

If McDermott is wanting to promote downtown Hammond, someone in his administration should get off their xxx and look at problems like this.

Wolf Lake Beautification Project

This location is just south of Wolf Lake, south of the Bulckmatic property which Tom McDermott purchased on behalf of Hammond residents. The trash looks like it has been there for a while! Years!

What an eye sore!

Mayor Tom purchased the property to the north of this location from Bulkmatic. Bulkmatic is a transporter of chemicals by tanker truck across the country. Chemical spills are common in this industry. I believe Bulkmatic owned that site or used it for a decade or longer.

Hammond residents paid $900,000 for a toxic waste site? A premium price for a tanker parking lot which haulled toxic waste? Now as far as Hammond Residents know, there was never an environmental study, to my knowledge, and if their was, it was never PUBLISHED! Who only knows what contaminants are in that land? Now you own it!

$900,000 was a very hefty price for property that would have required remediation for any other use. In my opinion, in an era where the EPA is becoming more concerned regarding tainted property, this property owner dumped a piece of most likely toxic property on Hammond Residents, thanks to McDermott.

No one has really questioned McDermott on why the city paid $900,000, a ghastly price, for a more than likely contaminated field which once stored tanker trucks carrying all sorts of toxic chemicals.

I wonder what the incident of illnesses are assocaited with the chemical in the Robertsdale area? You don't think rain/water run off went into Wolf Lake and in to the Hammond Sanitary district?

Their was an article in the NWI Times which stated fish pulled out of Wolf Lake were suffering from a neuro disease.

No hand rails on steps, roof needs repair, been like this for years. This is the type of rental property that Tom's Code enforcement should spend their time on, but Tom chooses to have his code enforcement department go after those who voice their opinion regarding accountable government.

This is the type of rental property that causes Hammond it's problems!

It is just a matter of time, due to inconsistencies in Code Enforcement, that the city will be hit with additional litigation regarding it lack of consistent enforcement.

Quote:
Ind. Decisions - "Hammond’s apartment ordinance blocked by federal judge"

Teresa Auch Schultz reports today in the Gary Post-Tribune:

A federal judge has blocked a Hammond ordinance that charges non-city apartment owners more than those who live in the city.

U.S. District Judge Theresa Springmann also said in her order, issued Thursday in the U.S. District Court in Hammond, that the Indiana Apartment Association would likely win its lawsuit against Hammond’s rental registration ordinance.

The suit focuses on a law the Hammond City Council approved in 2010 to charge apartment owners $20 per rental unit in the city every year. Owners who do not live in the city would be charged more, however, at $80 a unit every year.

IAA filed a federal lawsuit last year, saying the ordinance violates the U.S. Constitution’s Commerce Clause by hurting a non-resident’s right to do business in Hammond.

The city fought back, however, filing responses saying that because a large majority of rental problems come from those owned by non-residents, it was only fair to charge them more.

Springmann disagrees, saying in her ruling that the city did not provide similar statistics for how many of the apartments in Hammond are owned by non-residents. If a large majority are owned by people living outside the city, then it only makes sense they also make up a large portion of the problem apartments.

“The ordinance discriminates on its face against non-Hammond residents,” Springmann says in the ruling.

Another problematic property, not too long ago gang bangers were sitting on the front porch. Parts of the property were tagged by gang bangers in a turf war.

I just love the roof, it is a new art deco shingle design.

Was this landlord, who is not a member of team hammond, good enough to contribute to a campaign fund and made exempt from keeping up their property?
