I agree......no more free hand outs Gary, time for Gary to take responsibility for their own problems.

Welcome to adulthood.

And low and behold, guess who is pissed at the moves Clay is trying to make in order to make payroll for the year, the damn pesky unions

Go figure, they would rather the city go broke then to allow a paycut

i have no sympathy for the gary administration and agree they deserve all of the headaches they now have. they along with past administrations have dug this whole themselves and the citizens that elected them to bare some responsibility.

however. all of the gary bashing from outside the city is neglecting a far more important issue.

most of the rest of lake county is going to experience the same...if not greater fiscal crises (plural) over the next 4 years. and most of these bodies dont have a casino to lean on to help bail them out.

folks. even the growth communities are on the brink. reason being the residential 1% cap means that these communities literally will not have the revenue coming in that it costs to serve its new citizens. try building new schools and digging new sewer lines on those budget caps. its impossible. these communities that have long depended on increased assessed values from home construction to keep them solvent, and at the same time have gone out of their way to limit commercial and industrial development are going to be a fiscal disaster come 2012. and im talking to you dyer, and crown point.

so while gary may deserve what its getting. the relishing in their demise should be put on hold. for many of the rest of us are going to feel the same pain down the road.

the pt recently called gary the canary in a coal mine. while the pt'e editorial pages are rarely correct...this is a case where they have stumbled accurately on to a fact. ec and whiting will feel the pinch next year. merrillville and griffith by 2010. by the time the next gubernatorial election comes around i suspect half of lake county may be in bankruptcy.

the only municipalities that will survive ok are municipalities that have been both growing thier tax base beyond the residential explosions in south county and at the same time have been reducing the size of their government spending. in all of lake county there is one single municipality that has done that over the past 3 years....but there are a handfull of others that have done much better than the rest.

if you dont live in one of those already...you are going to be very sorry to have celebrated in gary's demise. for you will know it yourselves.

I have absolutely no pity for any city in Lake County that may experiance issues in the next 4 yrs Oracle

They did it to themselves

I learned the hard way what happens when you are not smart with money, and had to declare bankruptcy, and guess what, 5 yrs later I am way smarter with my money than I was before hand.

Some may say I ducked out on my responsibilities, but like I said in another thread, I originally went to the attorney for a chapter 13, and he told me I would be better off going with a Chapter 7, so that's what I did.
